Create Playlists to share your video and audio files in Microsoft 365

New demo video with tips and tricks, plus known feedback

Hi Peer,

It’s time to make a mixed tape for your co-workers. If I lost you on the phrase ‘mixed tape’ or simply the word ‘tape’, this might imply you have less gray hair than I. The more modern word for a collection of audio and video files these days is Playlist. And I want to share and show more about Playlists in Microsoft 365.

'Playlist' definition from OxfordLanguages | A list of recorded songs or pieces of music chosen to be broadcast on a radio show or by a particular radio station. Example: "The station is confident that the new playlists will please listeners."

With Playlists in Microsoft 365, you add content using the new 'Playlist' template in Microsoft Lists. Once you have the right collection of audio or video files, it's instantly ready to playback and share. This combines Lists ease of use with the trusted value of Stream (on SharePoint) powering the playback experience.

We’ll start with the new demo video below that shows how to get started with this new list template, a few tips along the way - including how to reorder the audio and video files, highlight the full-fidelity playback experience (thanks, Stream player), and what it looks like to create a Playlist from within Stream.

TIP | Reorder the audio and video files in your playlist

To add the ability to reorder your playlist, go to the All items view, add a Number column titled “Order”, put a unique number for each audio or video file, and then choose to reorder by this new Order column, from Smaller to larger. Save to update the “All items” view. Now, when you witch to the Playlist view, it’ll show in your preferred order.

Adding a Number column titled “Order” gives you the ability to reorder your Playlist to represent the audio and video files in your preferred playback order.

Known feedback (and keep it coming)

Playlists are fresh into the service as of February 15, 2023 - with use and adoption kicking up. With all the recent eyeballs and hands-on experience, what we look forward to is hearing what people want to do next (or hope to have as a service update soon). We’re ears open and tracking early feedback; it is reaching the product team’s ear (like the tweet from MVP, HIRANO Ai, below to Marc Mroz (Stream Principal PM at Microsoft)). So far, people are asking for:

• Support for Playlists in Microsoft Teams channels.

• Playback within Microsoft Lists mobile apps.

• Embed a Playlist using the SharePoint List web part.

• Ability to more easily reorder the audio and video files.

• Default to “Title” metadata, not just file name.
